IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation is administered by an anesthesiologist in a medical setting. IV sedation is a type of general anesthetic that must be monitored to ensure a consistent level of sedation throughout the procedure. For most dental procedures, you will remain conscious, but there may be some procedures for which you will be required to be unconscious.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is helpful in preventing anxiety in adults and children. It is a mild sedative that is administered using a mask placed over your nose. The effects are usually felt within a few minutes, after which time you will still be conscious but feel completely relaxed. The effects of nitrous oxide pass very quickly, so this form of sedation is ideal for patients who need to drive home.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is another form of conscious sedation that will help you relax during your procedure. This sedation is taken as a pill before your appointment, and although you will be awake, you may begin to feel quite sleepy. Oral sedation may also have an amnesiac effect, so you may not remember the full details of your visit.
